The Applied Learning Module (ApLM) aims to give students the opportunity to gain practical, hands-on experience that allows them to apply their knowledge in real-world settings. In Dunearn, students will participate in at least 1 ApLM when they are in secondary 3. The ApLM is designed with the best interests of students in mind by ensuring that their personal growth, interests, and strengths are central to the modules offered. This approach not only supports the development of students' portfolios but also equipped them with skills they can showcase in their academic and career development.

Key Features of the ApLM:

1. Authentic Learning Environment: Students engage in activities that closely mimic real-world tasks, allowing them to gain insights into various professions or industries.

2. Personalised Exploration: The module helps students discover their personal interests and strengths by exposing them to a variety of fields, from science and technology to fashion design and beauty and health wellness.

4. Industry Partnerships: ApLM typically involves collaboration with external organisations, industry experts and higher tertiary institution.

ApLM 2024

Below are the ApLM our secondary 3 students participated in 2024.

1)     Introduction to Food Innovation at Singapore Polytechnic

Students were given the opportunity to immerse themselves in the world of the food technology industry. They gained valuable knowledge in areas such as food safety, sensory analysis, and the science behind formulating popular food products. From crafting health-conscious, sensory-enhanced ice cream recipe to perfecting croissants with ideal textures and flavors, students were provided with an in-depth understanding of how innovation and technology shape the future of food production.

2)     Fashion Design

This module provided students with the knowledge, skills, and understanding of various aspects and processes within the fashion industry, including fashion design, fashion accessories, fashion drawing, and fabrics. It offered students the opportunity to explore creative approaches to addressing technical challenges related to garment design and production. Additionally, students were informed about various career prospects within the industry, preparing them for successful careers in the ever-evolving world of fashion.

3)     Aeronautics and Drone Flying Technology

The Aeronautics and Drone Flying Technology course provided a comprehensive introduction to the principles of flight and the operation of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs). Students explored aerodynamics, drone components, and flight dynamics while gaining hands-on experience in drone operation. The course also addressed potential career prospects within the aeronautics field, highlighting various opportunities for growth and innovation. By the end of the module, students gained an understanding of both the theoretical and practical aspects of aeronautics and drone technology, equipping them for careers in this rapidly growing sector.

4)     Hairstyling, Beauty and Health Wellness

The Hairstyling, Beauty & Wellness course was a comprehensive program designed to immerse students in the hairstyling, beauty, and wellness industry. Students developed practical skills in hairstyling techniques, beauty treatments, and wellness care, while also gaining insights into planning and managing a beauty and wellness operation and career prospects within the industry.

5)     Fitness Sports Science

This module aims to introduce students to the field of sports sciences and to explore the scientific principles that underlie athletic performance. Students examined topics such as biomechanics, physiology, nutrition, and sports medicine, thereby gaining a comprehensive understanding of how the human body functions and adapts to physical activity. Additionally, students were informed about various career opportunities within the sports industry, preparing them for a successful future in this dynamic and evolving field.

6) Digital Publishing @ Republic Poly

This module teaches the basic skills in visual communication design using the software Adobe Photoshop and Adobe InDesign.

It introduces students to the workflow and roles and responsibilities required in a creative team, software tools, and develop pre-press production skills and processes in order to create an interactive digital publication using typography, images, and graphical elements.

8) User Experience Design and Physical Prototyping @ Republic Poly

This module puts you into the role of a designer, where you will explore ideas through sketching and apply physical prototyping techniques to create a gaming mouse. You will learn the basics of User Experience Design and the science of ergonomics in an open-minded creative environment. Experience the life of a designer as you prototype your ideas, model them and present them to your friends to get feedback through feedback sessions.
